I get a lot of emails from people wondering how I’m doing in the stretches between blog updates. I thought I’d create a page to tell you all what I’m up to right now, which I’ll update as things change. So if you’re ever wondering how I’m doing, check out this page!
I finished chemotherapy! As of September, 2015 I am 100% done with my three-year chemo regimen. I got a PET/CT in August that showed I have no evidence of cancer left. At this point the risk of relapse, while not impossible, is very, very small. I still have lowish energy and some pain, but I expect I’ll make a full recovery within the next 6 months.
I’m still in my psychiatry residency program at UCLA and I have a little bit more work to do before I graduate. My health and energy is not at full tilt yet, but once it is I plan to graduate (finally!) and start a private practice focusing on Integrative Psychiatry (using evidence-based complementary and holistic approaches, such as homeopathy, meditation, nutrition, Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda, etc. along with traditional psychiatric medications and therapy) and Psycho-oncology (supporting people struggling with depression or anxiety after a cancer diagnosis and while on treatment).
I am also seriously pursuing a publishing deal to write a memoir about my cancer experience. If you have any advice or ideas or connections with agents, publishers, etc., let me know!
I’m living in Santa Monica and taking it easy until my health is back to 100% and I can focus more on my professional goals. I’ve been playing some guitar and recently took up the piano again after a 20ish year hiatus (I posted a video of me playing Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonata 1st Movement on Facebook that I think is public, if you’d like to check it out). I’ve also been writing some music that I hope to record and post soon.
Big Magic, Elizabeth Gilbert
The Firestarter Sessions, Danielle LaPorte
A Mercy, Tony Morrison
The Circle, Dave Eggers (meh)
The Power of When, Michaek Breus, PhD (love this)
The Urban Monk, Pedram Shojai, OMD
And yeah, I’m in love… I’m going to keep the rest to myself for now 🙂
